living with a Japanese artist

The Project

During the height of the pandemic in New York City, I had the incredible experience of living and interning with Japanese artist Keiko Miyamori. The internship included re-designing her website, photography of her artworks, designing 2 books, and several writing assignments. Beyond carrying out detail oriented tasks for her, I experienced the gift of being an Uchi-deshi (内弟子), live-in student or apprentice who trains under and assists a Sensei on a full-time basis, studying the Japanese martial art of Iaido.

“On the street,
in front of the beautiful house,
in trash,
with people,
by itself,
through a metal fence,
and so on.

The memories with
my neighborhood trees,
dropped in transparent boxes.”

- Keiko Miyamori
